It's Been 5 Months

...since my last dose of Cipro, and I might have to start it up again. Darn, adorable, gross kindergarteners spreading their germs! :) It was bound to happen sooner or later, so I'm not surprised.
Last post I shared about my flu shot, and I'm happy to report that I didn't have any kind of reaction to it which I was happy about. But around Tuesday/Wednesday I was having a ton of post nasal drip and the back of my throat was getting very sore. I couldn't tell if it was just allergies or if it was the start of a cold, so I just tried to get as much of it out as possible. Then yesterday it started to work its way into my sinuses and today I've been sneezing and blowing my nose all day - I've also got a lot of sinus pressure.
This morning I decided to email my doctor and nurse to see if they could call in a 14 script for Cipro because I wanted to catch this before it went into my chest and became any worse. Well, I just got off the phone with my doctor a little bit ago, and she thinks that it could possibly be viral (since that seems to be going around right now) -- which means the Cipro really wouldn't do much. So I'm going to wait it out over the next day or two to see if it gets any worse or starts to move into my chest. If it does, she wants me to start my two weeks of Cipro and also to pair it with a month of Tobi. She also told me to increase my airway clearance to 3-4 times a day to try to get rid of whatever it is...ugh!
I know I've been so complaint with my treatments over the past year, but I hate increasing my treatments! I'm really good about getting in my treatments twice a day, but that doesn't mean I enjoy doing them or that I don't ever stall to do them each day. So now that I have to do three-four a day, that just drives me crazy. But I'm going to do my best to try to keep up with the extra treatments, especially because I have a three day weekend so I should have the time. I'd love to kick this cold or whatever it is out of my body without having to go on Cipro because I don't want to build up any resistance to it. I used to go on Cipro maybe once a year, and this would be my third dose this year, so lets hope I can get rid of it on my own with increased treatments. :-)

  1. Good luck! If it makes you feel better, I used to be on Augmentin every 2-3 months for sinuses, and I was that way for YEARS. I never built up a resistance to it. I'm in the same boat - I can tell I'm in the beginning stages of a sinus infection. It's been 4 months since my last, which is pretty awesome for me, but it's somewhat stressful since I can't take any effective orals while pregnant (I'm allergic to the "safe" ones)! The OB gave me a course of azithromycin, which doesn't usually help me, but I'm really hoping this time it will be actually helpful and kick the sinus infection out the door. ;)

    1. I hope you're able to fight your sinus infection with Zithro. I'm on that every MWF, so that's why I have to go on Cipro if I get an infection. Hope you start feeling better!! :)

    2. Yeah... I have been on the constant azithro for two several-year periods, but it never did ANYTHING for me so I took myself off it. But it is literally the only thing that is safe in pregnancy and I'm not allergic to, so it was worth a shot to try to avoid a scarier med like Levaquin. I guess we'll see! I'm hoping that we've caught it early enough that it will do at least SOMETHING. And I'm with you and John - every time I get a cold, I have to have antibiotics. Usually for me, I eventually end up in the hospital on IVs too. :-/ It's pretty rotten! Luckily this current sinus infection is not a result of a virus - it's just my chronic sinusitis acting up - so I don't have the massive congestion and post-nasal drip that always leads to really bad lungs.

  2. I hope that you can rid this darn cold on your own. Really 3-4 treatments a day. That seems like a lot of vesting!! I can only imagine how hard that would be for me. I vest and flutter twice a day religiously. My vesting schedule is once when I get up and once when I head to bed for 30 mins each time. If I had to fit in another two 30 minute sessions I think I would go insane as I work full time.

Do you feel like when you get a common cold you have to call the Dr. to get meds to clear it up? I feel like I do its so annoying that we cannot fight a common cold like others without antibiotics. But I'm thankful we have meds that can nip it in the butt.

Wishing you a speedy recovery from that "common" cold :)

    1. It is a lot of vesting! I don't want to sound like I'm complaining because I know some CFers have to do that daily, but it's just out of the norm for me. My schedule sounds similar to yours -- I do one 30 minute session in the morning before work and another 30 minutes after work (or before bed if I stall).
I work full time, too, as a kindergarten teacher, so I usually don't get home until 5 or 5:30, so it's hard fitting another 2-3 treatments in...we'll see. Like I said, at least I'll have this weekend to try to get the extras in, then we'll see how I'm feeling by Tuesday.

Yes, I feel like I need to call for antibiotics (typically Cipro) when I get a common cold, because I never know if it's going to go into my chest or not. I'd rather be safe then sorry. Usually my colds start in my sinuses, so I know they're coming, so I usually have time to call in a prescription before it gets worse. I agree, I hate having to go on antibiotics anytime I get a cold, but it is nice that we have access to medication to help us. :)
